Our aim is to stop the Severn crossing tolls. Since 1966 when the first crossing was built we have been paying to cross the River Severn and it continues still to this day. A report commissioned by the Welsh government said businesses and consumers spend £80m a year crossing the Severn bridges.Operated by private company Severn River Crossings Plc, the bridges are used by about 80,000 vehicles every day. The company's concession will end when takings from the tolls reach £996m at 1989 prices. Cars now cost £6.20, vans and mini buses £12.40 and Lorries £18.60. In the last year traffic over the bridges has dropped considerably, impacting on trade in the South West and Wales. If the Tolls were abolished an estimated an extra 11000 vehicles a day would use the bridges, bringing a massive boost to business in the region, not to mention taking the strain off the people who already use it. The tolls are damaging the Welsh and West of England's economies yet the Government is putting the profits of Severn Bridges Plc first. IT NEEDS TO STOP!
