With the news that Sainsburys are opening on the site of the Carpetright store on Tulse Hill we in the community want to express our unhappiness at the proliferation of chain supermarkets in the Brixton area. We have 6 Sainsburys within a mile radius of that site, and a further 3 Tescos (with another one planned for the George IV site on Brixton Hill). In addition an enormous Tesco is currently being constructed just a short distance away in Streatham. We call upon Lambeth Council to listen to us, and to use their planning powers (creating a bylaw if necessary)to ensure greater diversity. We say protect local businesses. We say we value diversity. We say NO MORE CHAIN SUPERMARKETS.
