No Funding for Blake Lane Park Destruction - Transfer Land to FCPA!

We urge the Board of Supervisors to save Blake Lane Park, by removing the $35.3 million for construction of a "Fairfax Oakton Area ES" from the 2019 School Bond Referendum.
Update: The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors have voted unanimously to amend the request from Fairfax County Public Schools by adding the language "site to be determent" to the school board referendum which will be included on the ballot on November 5.

Why this petition:
We oppose school planning that pits schools against parks: our children need both, and adults need parks, too. A school area is not a park - it is, for example, closed to the public much of the day, while school is in session. Blake Lane Park is the backyard of all the families living in the nearby townhouses: their one and only nearby green-space.
Help us transfer Blake Lane Park to Fairfax County Park Authority!

I have been staring at the maps for hours trying to figure out why they think this is the only spot left for a new building when there are so many empty lots around. It feels like they are just waiting for us to stop paying attention but the emails i keep getting from you all about how much your kids use that green space keep me from putting the laptop away.

There are 48 less kids at Oakton Elementary this year. Traffic is going to be awful especially when school lets out. It's already horrible on Blake Lane that time of the day. Save the park, we need this green space and our soccer fields.
My kids love playing baseball, football and soccer in the park. They need a safe place to do this ans have the freedom to go anytime to do so without me having to drive them somewhere to do so. It’s better for the environment and creates for a more beautiful place to live.
Remove Blake Lane Park from site consideration to build another school. Instead, run water to Waples Mill Elem and increase the size of that school or do a two story addition to Mosby Woods. Get creative..
Blake Lane Park is critical open space for a densely developed and diverse neighborhood. It has no other ready options. There is no need for another school here. What is needed is redistricting. Do the hard work. Don’t make this neighborhood suffer.
The park Ian not the appropriate site for the school. Many solutions have been proposed by the community but no alternative considerations have been offered by the School Board/Local Government. This issue would make a permanent and irreversible impact on this community.
We need more parks!

Remove the $35.43 million for construction of a Fairfax Oakton Area ES from the 2019 Bond Referendum. Prior to spending this money a complete boundary study of existing schools should be completed. Let’s not lose a park or spend money needlessly before a comprehensive boundary study is completed.
