Petition to amend Bill No 6. Chapter 342 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, Nova Scotia Petroleum Resources Act to protect all provincial substrates and waters from the threat of injection with known hazardous compounds or unknown proprietary blended chemicals in pursuit of gas or mineral resources.
We call our government to:
1. outright ban or extend the moratorium on shale hydraulic fracturing
2. include coal bed methane deposits in the ban
3. remove the acceptance or approval for testing or research purposes
Since the introduction of this Bill, there has been a moratorium on high-pressure hydraulic fracturing in shale deposits. However, this does not prohibit fracking in coal bed deposits, or any area for research and testing purposes. This is hardly a ban at all.

Nova Scotia currently has six companies exploring for either coal gas or conventional oil and gas on almost 875,000 hectares of land. There are a total of nine agreements, which may be broken down as follows: five exploration agreements, one conventional oil and gas production lease, one coal gas exploration agreement, and two coal gas production agreements.

Only the Municipality of Inverness County has passed a By-Law to protect their groundwater from "slick water hydraulic fracturing" and drilling wastewater contamination, and depletion. https://invernesscounty.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020...

The conditions under which Nova Scotia banned fracking has not changed. Our groundwater, our health and ability to climate degradation remains the same. It is time to move to solar power, wind power and marine energy.
