NMMU ANTI GENDER BASED VIOLENCE PLEDGE

As the broad NMMU community from different walks of life and from different spaces of influence. We note with great concern and disheartened hearts the growth of gender based violence in our communities and society at large. We understand that the university space is microcosm of the broader society and we therefore refuse to remain silent any longer! We refuse to allow for patriarchy to remain as a system that supresses women. We dedicate ourselves in ensuring to create lasting solutions to end violence and oppression of women and therefore this is our pledge:

  • I pledge to not commit nor support gender violence and all of its manifestations.
  • I pledge to respect women and not promote the sexualisation of women’s bodies.
  • I pledge to not remain silent in the presence of injustice against women.
  • I pledge to educate myself about gender inequality and the oppression that exists.
  • I pledge to speak for those in neighbourhood, family, work and school.
  • I pledge to contribute in making society a safe space for women.
  • I pledge to ensure that I educate myself about gender inequality and the oppression that exists.
  • I pledge to be part of those that ensure that the cycle of men’s entitlement over women ends.
