Students, alumni and friends of Salesian High School who have signed this petition want a new logo and new mascot that retains the name CHIEFTAIN to be considered for the new mascot of Salesian High School. We understand, although many may not like it, the drive of the administration to move away from a logo and mascot that Native Americans may find offensive. The administration states concerns over keeping the name Chieftain but all of those fall to the wayside if a truly unigue and new Chieftain-related logo and mascot design is developed. No one will ever think of or associate a Native American with the new logo and mascot. This can be done and has been done[see Golden State Warrior logos as an example] and we, the signed members of the Salesian community, strongly prefer a new logo and new mascot that retains the name CHIEFTAIN.
