We are aiming to lobby the government to revise its plan to this year ensure that all year 1 pupils in England take a Phonics Screening Check. The General Teaching Council (GTC), NUT and others have voiced their concerns and now we feel its time that parents did the same. Our children are already formally assessed more than any of their peers in Europe and as the GTC points out these test do not raise standards but do raise anxiety and lead to de-motivation.
The current momentum confirms that our position against the Phonics Screening Check has gained significant leverage. I am now preparing a formal briefing for the Department for Education to challenge the necessity of these assessments.

THESE TESTS ARE A WASTE OF TIME. let kids be kids for heaven sake. stop putting so much pressure on them when they are just starting out

my son comes home so stressed about these tests. he is only 6 years old he should be playing not worrying about failing a screening check.
