Villanova is considering adding courses in music studies and ultimately a music studies minor. In order to achieve this goal we need to gauge student interest in an academic program that would include: music history, music theory, and potentially receiving credit for ensemble participation. Please sign this petition and include your class year if you would consider taking any of these courses or are interested in a music studies minor.

I have been meeting with department heads to discuss how a formal music curriculum would shape our campus culture. It is clear that the lack of academic credit for our creative work is a gap we need to bridge.

Seeing this level of enthusiasm for a music program validates everything I hoped for when I started this. Having access to these courses would have changed my own experience on campus so much, and knowing so many others feel the same way is incredibly moving.

I almost transferred because there was no good music program here. I love playing the violin and am discouraged from playing for an orchestra that just plays jazz music. I miss Tchaikovsky, Mozart, and other classical musicians

2019. I would have loved to continue playing the clarinet, but with no academic incentive, other commitments caused me to ultimately give up playing music. Offering courses/a minor/credit for ensemble performance would only enhance the Villanova experience. I would have definitely taken advantage of that if it was in existence when I started here.

As a member of various activities within the office of Music Activities, I know MANY people who would be interested in pursuing music as an academic discipline. I think this program would not only be popular among current students, but would encourage even more musically inclined students to consider Villanova.

This is definitely what Villanova is missing. I've played flute since I was 6 and now I'm having trouble continuing my study in music. It's extremely frustrating.

I fully support this idea, and think it would be a great addition! It would allow students, like myself, who actively participated in music and the arts in high school to continue with their music studies, while still pursuing a major/career in a different field!

I would be interested in learning about music production, the history of popular music throughout our country, music theory, and being able to receive credit for ensemble participation/being able to receive credit for internships that align with music production that could count towards a music studies minor. Thanks!

Throughout my undergraduate experience at Villanova, I was able to explore my musical passions through Music activities programs. I was active in musical theater, the Singers, and a cappella. As an engineer music was my release, my chance to escape the constant work and explore something I loved. Now as a graduate student I can't think of my undergraduate experience without music activities. My only regret was that I was never able to explore my passion for music in an academic setting. The one music class I signed up for ended up getting cancelled. Having a dedicated music program would be a huge opportunity for students like me to learn even more about something that drives them as a passion, something that they turn to for release and for companionship. Villanova should absolutely have a music minor, in fact it should have had one years ago.

This would be a great opportunity for students to become more involved with the arts on campus!
