we actually did it and the society officially announced they are moving to a hybrid format. i cant express how much your backing meant when things looked grim. we really pulled this off together so stay tuned for how we keep pushing for better accessibility in the future.

Final supporters
As members of the Society for American Archaeology and members of the Archaeological Community, we are dismayed that the society still continues to plan to offer an in person conference for 2022 in Chicago. This is for the following reasons: 1.) We are currently in the midst of an unprecedented climate crisis. One meeting of the AGU created carbon emissions equivalent to those of 1443 average American families. 2.) We are still in a global pandemic and requiring presenters to present in person in packed indoor conference centers both places communities in Chicago at risk as well as the communities within which researchers reside. 3.) This is also an issue of equity: archaeologists who live outside the United States and who do either not have vaccine access or who are unable to travel because of travel bans will be unable to access the conference.
We urge the society to rethink its next meeting and offer either a fully online or hybrid experience.

I am a long-time member who would love to see my friends at the conference. However, I strongly believe we should offer alternatives for those with compromised immune systems, precarious employment, or who are not within easy driving distance of Chicago.
I have been to several other conferences that have adopted online or hybrid formats and they work very well. This isn't even the future, it is how things are done in the 2020s. Get with the program!
Hybrid conference will extend participation to students, faculty with limited travel funds, and those in foreign countries. The online 2020 SAA conference was a big success
I certainly agree that a hybrid option should be offered this year and ideally in the future as well. While the health situation may improve, the environmental and social justice issues will remain, and can hopefully be addressed in part by making conference access easier and more equitable for all.
I am not yet a member as I have not been able to afford to travel to previous conferences. I would be delighted if there was the opportunity to present on-line and I would very gladly become a member. On-line participation would greatly enrich the content and dialogue.
Science fields need to put their knowledge to practice.
