Move the SAA 2022 Online or to Hybrid Format

I echo the comments of so many here. As the parent of children too young to be vaccinated, I believe it is irresponsible of the SAA to be holding a fully in-person meeting in 2022. Moreover, as the pandemic demonstrated, in-person meetings across the country (or on the other side of the globe for some) to give a 15 minute talk is an obsolete ritual of academia, not to mention a major cause of carbon emissions. Let's be more equitable, let's be more inclusive, let's be better, and let's lead the way. Hybrid meetings, regional meetings, alternating years of in-person and on-line, etc.

Online and hybrid options for conferences not only help reduce our carbon footprint, but also help bolster diversity and inclusion efforts.

Correction: 2022, not 2021.

This global pandemic will not end before April 2021. Consider the safety of SAA Annual Meeting participants and provide a remote access option.

SAA, this is an unprecedented situation with the pandemic. Please make the right choice for US academics and even more so for non-US based academics and go remote.

Given the new information about weaning immunity without booster shots and the continued absence of a vaccine for child family members and for our colleagues and other countries, it doesn’t make sense to risk infection by getting thousands of people together in person. I very much miss in person meetings like everyone, but I implore the organization to permit remote attendance for some members.

While I would like an in person conference for networking opportunities, I agree that a virtual or hybrid conference is more ethnical and inclusive.

Online formats provide safety from covid but also equity for those who cannot travel given funding/economic differences, and reduces our already heavy carbon footprints.

I am a long-time member who would love to see my friends at the conference. However, I strongly believe we should offer alternatives for those with compromised immune systems, precarious employment, or who are not within easy driving distance of Chicago.

Please provide remote participation options and considering alternating in-person conference years.

SAA can show its commitment to student access and contributions by a diverse audience by moving to a hybrid format.

The SAA can demonstrate its commitment to inclusion and diversity by moving to on-line and hybrid formats.

There are many reasons to consider a hybrid option including better access for disabled scholars and/or people with medical conditions who do not want to risk traveling in this uncertain environment.

Provide a hybrid option for SAA 2022 and future conferences.

Don’t burn fossil fuel to go to conferences, especially those about global warming. Don’t contribute to the problem.
