St. John’s City Councillor Sheilagh O'Leary is currently pushing the provincial Government to change the Provincial Highway Traffic Act to ban aftermarket motorcycle exhaust systems. If a noise pollution problem does exist then it must be addressed as that and motorcycles should in no way be blamed as its sole cause. Other noise pollution contributors such as snow blowers, ski-Doo's, Jake Brakes, Hot Rods, Tuner cars, lawnmowers and construction equipment must also be regulated. As respectful, responsible citizens, most motorcyclists ride with respect and rarely ever cause any issues to the public. In rare cases where individuals are being a nuisance, they should be dealt with by enforcing laws that already exist such as the city’s noise by laws.
