I am wanting to start a petition in Montana to make it illegal to charge First,Last and Deposit on rental properties. It is illegal in other states. I believe that you should only be able to charge first and last or first and deposit just like the California law... would you sign the petition???? California law puts a limit on the deposits that the owner can ask for, no matter what they are called. All of them cannot add up to more than the cost of two months rent for an unfurnished apartment or three months rent for a furnished place

I honestly cannot believe how many people are jumping on board with this rent deposit issue because it really feels like we are finally pulling the curtain back on how unfair these move-in costs have become. My phone has been buzzing nonstop with messages from people sharing their own horror stories about trying to find a place to live when landlords demand everything upfront and I am just so floored that we are gaining this much steam.

its impossible to save up enough money move in anywhere in billings right now. landlords are literally asking for thousands upfront its insane.

moving here from out of state was a nightmare because of the deposits. way too much cash to have on hand just to get keys.

THIS IS LONG OVERDUE. Montana rent is way too high and these move in costs are just keeping people stuck in bad situations.
