The Monroe City Council voted to restrict the site plan to 80,000 square feet today. We successfully secured the mandate to prevent the larger store from moving forward. I will continue to monitor the final site development documents to ensure the city holds the developer to these new terms.
We, the undersigned, request that the Monroe City Council conduct a review on whether Sabey Corporation withheld key information from the city council in negotiations for the purchase of the North Kelsey lot adjacent to Galaxy Theatre that would have affected the final purchase price of the lot.
In addition we request that the Monroe City Council vote to deny the site plan or restrict the size of the proposed 155,000sf Walmart Store on North Kelsey to 80,000sf.
Any such store of this magnitude catering to a region-wide market will have a profound and detrimental impact to the surrounding area businesses and will significantly compound traffic congestion on already saturated streets. We hope that by limiting the size of the store we may limit the amount of negative traffic and economic impact a Walmart store will have in our community.
I have spent the last few days reviewing municipal land use codes to prepare our formal request for the Monroe City Council regarding the North Kelsey site negotiations. We are currently drafting a letter to the planning department to demand a public inquiry into the initial purchase price of the lot. Expect a summary of their response once I have received it.

NO WALMART. Traffic is bad enough as it is. Think about the residents for once instead of just the tax revenue.

So tired of these huge corporations pushing us around. We already have enough empty retail space. Protect the local businesses!
