Hello, it is a pleasure to introduce myself, for those who I have not had the honor of meeting, my name is Monica Roberts, and I am running for the position of 2L Class Secretary for the upcoming 2022-2023 academic year.

Just to give a brief background about myself, I graduated from the University of Georgia in May 2020 with a degree in Communication Studies, minoring in Japanese Language and Literature. I was born in Yokosuka, Japan, and traveled to various cities, but I spent a majority of my life in the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia.

Throughout my time at the University of Georgia, I was able to be apart of several organizations such as Georgia Daze, Black Educational Support Team, and Elevate Clarke County Mentor Program, all of which were geared towards assisting, and mentoring minority youth and/or college students. During my senior year, I served as the Secretary of the Undergraduate National Communication Association. The roles are very similar and several of the duties that are required for this position, I fulfilled in my prior term. That position allowed me to gain valuable experience that I could further build upon as the 2L Class Secretary.

Over the past several months, I have been able to get to know many of my peers and I am so grateful for the relationships I have built. I was attracted to Detroit Mercy Law not only because it is in the heart of Detroit, but also because the school is committed to social justice, and service to others. No other law school made me feel as welcome as Detroit Mercy Law, and this feeling has yet to subside because of the amazing faculty and student body. My goal is to ensure that my peers are heard, and that the 2L class can be a unified community. As the 2L Class Secretary, I would serve as the liaison responsible for all correspondence to the 2L class. I am confident that I would be able to succeed in this role by maintaining consistent and effective communication from the class officers and faculty to the 2L student body.

I believe that I am the ideal candidate for this position because I possess the qualities necessary for the Secretary position such as strong organizational skills, timeliness, diligence, and close attention to detail. Given the opportunity to serve as 2L Class Secretary, I will perform my duties to the fullest, support and advocate for my fellow classmates, and further contribute to the success of Detroit Mercy Law.
