This is a petition to get the University of Brighton to purchase another Mini-Bus for Sports teams and Societies to use as they please.

The Government suggests that anyone with a Drivers License. I have been told that you can no longer drive a mini-bus in the UK unless you got your license before 1997. Well here is what the government has to say on the matter:

You Got you Driving Licence After Jan 1 1997

You can drive a minibus within the UK as long as the following conditions apply:

you’re 21 or olderthe minibus is used for social purposes by a non-commercial body you’ve had your driving licence for at least 2 years you meet the ‘Group 2’ medical standards if you’re over 70 - check with your GP if you’re not sure you meet the standardsyou’re driving on a voluntary basis and the minibus is used for social purposes by a non-commercial bodythe maximum weight of the minibus is not more than 3.5 tonnes - or 4.25 tonnes including specialist equipment for disabled passengers, eg a wheelchair rampyou’re not towing a trailer

So effectively, I could drive a Mini-Bus as long as its not rented/hired to me and I am not charging people to ride in it, it can only be for social purposes and non-commercial purposes. I can drive a Mini-Bus up to a 16 seater. See for yourself: https://www.gov.uk/driving-a-minibus

So therefore I ask all sports teams and societies to help me in getting Brighton University to purchase us a Bus. I don't mind if we all get together and raise the money for the bus ourselves, if that's the problem. We can surely all do enough fundraising to make this happen over the next academic year. But the University should pay for the insurance or provide us with a driver for when we need them.

This year I sat on the Sports Federation Committee who decides on which teams get funding. Much of the years budget was spent on Transport for teams to get to their competitions and Training. Most other universities have a mode of transport for their sports teams, so why not us?

Surely the Sports Teams and Societies can sign up one or two members of their club to be drivers, and the university can insure them for the days they need the Mini-Bus? We wouldn't have to insure them all year.

I have looked on Auto Trader and the prices fora 2nd hand Mini-Bus range from around £6000 - £9000. So lets get one!

If you support this please sign this petition!

Updates

April 22, 2014

The university continues to ignore the clear government guidance on minibus licensing that I sent to their transportation department last week. Email the student union president today to demand they address this logistical hurdle for our clubs. We need to keep pressure on them until they explain why they are refusing to expand our fleet.

We just hit a major milestone that shows how badly our sports teams and societies need this bus. Post our link on your team Facebook groups today to keep this momentum moving forward.

The introduction of a minibus for sports teams will earn revenue for the university and prevent the need to hire from external companies

It will help maintain the societies budget and make joining societies more cost effective.

It would be increadibly helpful for many of the sports team as currently the ski cpub has to arrange their own expensive transport or take their own cars that limit places and participation in sports. If weight of these vehicles is a problem then it still makes sence to take one car instead of 5/6 to ferry the equipment. Most clubs have away match that a minibus would also be essential too. Newer members of clubs should not be restricted in parsipitation of sports

A fairer chance for teams to get around, especially for societies with less/ no funding!

It's so expensive to hire external transport when the university should be doing everything it can to help sports teams.
