Hi Michelle, It seems as though you are beating around the bush here. After speaking to many other University Teams (from my sport) around the country. They all have access to a minibus, If a 16 seater is too big, get a 12 seater, and the rest can drive by car. Ultimately, you used to provide mini-buses as you have said. I am simply trying to get support for this for next years committee, not slamming the University for not providing one, I understand the problems surrounding having a minibus, in regards to cost, maintenance and hassle. My club have had a lot of problems with Travel to Training and competitions this year, due to lack of drivers and the high cost of travel. Societies and Sports teams should just simply have access to a mode of transport. After sitting on the Sports Fed Committee I have seen that around half the funding we have given away this year has been in Transport costs. And I am asking that we look into this as a possibility. So why can other universities provide a Mini-bus and not ours? I have even offered that we will pay for the Mini-Bus, through fundraising. If you have a problem with it being 2nd hand, then we can get a new one, just trying to save costs. Ultimately, we need a Mini-Bus for this university. I'm leaving this year, but would love to see next year some progression on this matter. As you have said, I was planning to be discussing this at the next Sports Federation Meeting. As we go into the new academic year, funds should be set aside. The University owns 3 Mini-Buses which they use to ferry people between campuses. Can't we have one more for sports teams and societies and maybe we could rent the others from the University when teams competitions clash? Although I doubt they would be happy about it, they aren't used on the weekends! Minibus yeah

It would be increadibly helpful for many of the sports team as currently the ski cpub has to arrange their own expensive transport or take their own cars that limit places and participation in sports. If weight of these vehicles is a problem then it still makes sence to take one car instead of 5/6 to ferry the equipment. Most clubs have away match that a minibus would also be essential too. Newer members of clubs should not be restricted in parsipitation of sports

Whilst this looks to be an attractive proposition there are a number of things that need to be considered: Yes you can drive a minibus without D1 under a Permit 19 (we already have these from when we did have minibuses). There are a number of restrictions, one being the weight of the vehicle, this would limit the size of the vehicle purchased and number of passengers and load. As a result a 15 seater would realistically be the largest minibus you could have. Many of the team sports regularly take 16 plus equipment. For example I am aware of a 16 seater vehicle being stopped with a hockey team on board with their basic match day equipment and being refused to continue because the vehicle weight was over the limit and illegal. When we did offer self-drive vehicles the insurers also put in place a number of limitations, one was age and driver experience. This meant many clubs were still unable to find driver that could meet the minimum criteria to drive legally. A further issue in the past has been that term times and demand from clubs all occur at the same times meaning that in reality very few clubs would be able to access the vehicle when they wanted it. As well as the cost to buy the bus you would need to cover costs to maintain the vehicle (these will be higher with a 2nd hand vehicle) and also a big cost with multiple drivers is insurance. Insurers will also request that all drivers undertake an assessment with a MiDAS qualified instructor. This is to satisfy not only insurers criteria but also best practice in terms of health and safety and is seen as a standard requirement for use of vehicles in this way. The vehicles will also need to be maintained, booked out/ checked in. Years ago we had three minibuses for student club/society use. Ultimately the shift in people no longer having D1 due to 1997 being a long time ago and these restrictions and costs meant that it was more cost effective, met the needs of individual clubs and indeed safer to p
