We, the undersigned, respectfully petition the Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners as follows:

WHEREAS,

1. The need for and location of a new county courthouse is a matter of great concern to the citizens of Santa Rosa County;

2. The citizens of Santa Rosa County expect wise management of taxpayer resources from their Board of County Commissioners;

3. The Board of County Commissioners has expended over $400,000.00 of taxpayer funds to obtain plans for building a new courthouse located in downtown Milton, Florida;

4. The Board of County Commissioners now proposes to relocate the Santa Rosa County Courthouse to a new location outside of Milton;

5. The proposed relocation will require significant unnecessary costs to taxpayers;

6. The Board of County Commissioners has not sufficiently explained why the current location in downtown Milton is unacceptable for a new courthouse;

7. The proposed relocation will have a disastrous financial impact on business and property owners in downtown Milton;

8. The construction of a new courthouse at the existing location will spur economic growth and development in downtown Milton;

WHEREFORE,

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners approve construction of a new courthouse pursuant to existing design plans, located in downtown Milton, Florida.

I am honestly stunned by the momentum this has gained so quickly. This is entirely due to your dedication to our town and I am just happy to play a small part in this effort.

While I think everybody agrees that we need a new courthouse, I believe it was poor judgment by the County Commission to be dismissive of the downtown Milton location for our new courthouse. Engineers have already determined the current courthouse location to be a viable option for our future courthouse. Hundreds of thousands of dollars of our hard earned money was spent on the plans for that proposed courthouse, and the courthouse as proposed was already approved by the commission. In my book, and I'm sure many others, $400,000.00 is a significant amount of money to be throwing away. Let's start thinking again about using our money wisely. It doesn't come easy these days, to any of us.

I have always been in favor of keeping the courthouse downtown. It is still the best location for so many reasons. As a retired courthouse employee I am very aware of all of the issues. The plan drawn up years ago was a great one and remains good today. It will be a terrible mistake to move it

The courthouse needs to stay downtown where it belongs. It's the heart of old Milton and without it, downtown Milton has no chance of survival.

My personal opinion is that it needs to stay downtown. The area is already geared for such a facility ... including the neighborhood. Why disrupt another neighbourhood.

The County is trying to destroy the downtown buisiness's. Build a lowrise parking facility and put the courthouse over it.

They could set up portables at the fairgrounds and make them employee and citizen friendly, then level the current courthouse and rebuild from the ground up, fortifying the structure for future development.
