The MIIS Outdoor Recreation Club is a newly established club on campus that's trying to offer everything that a recreation department has, but without being a department. So far, it's been a great success and hit with students. As more trips are planned, the club will gain momentum and grow. Though, this club cannot expand quickly enough to meet student's demands.
Looking around the area, larger schools like UC Santa Cruz offer surf lessons, outdoor trips, and more. Ideally, this would be great but we cannot offer that now because of the lack of funding for the Club. The fundraiser in the past was a great success, but it would take several fundraisers to even get the necessary tents and camping equipment to rent for students.
This petition will be brought to administrators to consider making the outdoor recreation club into a department or elevated from "club status" so we can offer more to students. Please sign and pass this off to all students who find that a recreation department would help MIIS grow into even a better school and community.
It should be noted that like anything at any school, this petition is only the START to something at MIIS. It does take time to implement these things and funding isn't the main priority of the petition. Something like this could make prodeals for new equipment easier and much more. Expect great things to happen from this petition, but at beginning stages where by each semester new things will be introduced to students. It's just the beginning BUT this has amazing potential for the future of MIIS and the community!!!

The administration expects us to settle for scraps while they ignore the glaring need for a proper recreation department. I am done asking nicely for the resources that should have been provided to us years ago. Expect to see me in their offices demanding answers until they finally acknowledge the reality of student life here.

The administration can no longer ignore the massive wave of students demanding a real recreation department. We have built undeniable momentum and it is time for the school to stop hiding behind budget excuses while we do their jobs for them.

Totally agree. The clubs are doing their best but they need real backing if we want to actually get gear and do bigger trips.
PLEASE make this happen. i moved here from across the country and i barely know how to get to the trails. need a department to organize things!
Need more support for the outdoor club. those guys work hard but they cant do it alone. make it official.
Why are we paying so much tuition if we dont have basic stuff like a rec department? Other schools have this figured out years ago.
Living in Monterey and not having a way to get out and surf or hike is a waste. We come here for the location too so let us enjoy it!

School is stressful enough. We need a way to blow off steam that isnt just sitting in the library.
