Good Morning Middle Valley!!

For those of you that I don't know me, my name is Suzie Verner and I live on Cloud Court, with my husband, David, and our two boys, Nick and Zack.

I am writing today to ask for your help in adding an Irving Middle School Bus Stop to the front of our neighborhood – at the intersection of Vogels Way and Candytuft Court (the current location of the Hunt Valley Elementary School bus stop).

How You Can Help:
Your support would be greatly appreciated and it will only take a minute! If you could please sign the electronic petition attached, by this Sunday, May 31 our combined voices will be heard and our children will have a better chance for a safer, closer bus stop solution – in our neighborhood!

The Situation:
For children living in the front of our neighborhood, the closest Irving Middle School bus stop is on the corner of Gambrill Road and Ridge Road – outside our neighborhood. And with the new earlier middle school start times, these children will have to walk along the very busy Ridge Road during rush hour traffic – in the dark most of the year!

While this bus stop addition request will help many, it impacts our family greatly. Our son, Zack, is on the Autism Spectrum and will be heading to 7th grade at Irving this fall. Since he does not always pay attention to his surroundings full-time, walking on Gambrill Road to and from the bus stop is not a safe choice.

I am meeting on Monday, June 1 with the Fairfax County Transportation team and would appreciate your support by signing the attached petition. I will keep you updated on the progress and hope that together we can make this positive change for our children.

Thanks,
Suzie Verner

Updates

May 28, 2015

I have spent the last few days mapping out the exact walking route our kids are currently forced to take along Ridge Road. Watching the morning traffic while thinking of Zack navigating that path alone makes me realize just how urgent this safety change is for all of our children.

Seeing this kind of backing from our neighborhood makes me feel so much better about Zack's safety this coming school year. Knowing that so many of you are behind this change gives me real hope for my meeting with the school board.

The drivers on Gambill Rd are not looking for school students early in the morning. I have seen near accidents when I run early in the morning.

Whenever I see these middle school students waiting, in the dark, on this corner of a somewhat busy and winding road, where vehicle speeds frequently exceed the posted speed limit (according to VDOT studies), I've wondered why this bus stop could not be moved into the neighborhood's interior.

I agree that having 7-8th graders wait at a stop on Gambrill Road, at a point where the road curves, is not safe. Putting the stops in the neighborhoods seems much better
