' 'Andrea Klettner, PlanningResource, 29 July 2010

The City of London Corporation's planning and transportation committee has approved a new £250m hotel on the banks on the River Thames.

The redevelopment of No 2 Puddle Dock and Mermaid house will see the demolition of the existing brutalist building, to be replaced by a seven-storey hotel. '

As this planning permission has gone ahead, we the undersigned wish for the new building to house a small theatre, to be called The Mermaid as a reminder for the millions of people have used it either as a performer or in an audience. We believe that London still needs some smaller venues for concerts of a more informal/intimate nature.

We hit a real turning point today and the developers cannot ignore this level of public interest anymore. Go to their website to find their official contact page and tell them we demand a theatre space in the new plans. Copy that same message into an email to your local representative before the week ends.

Small venues are the heart of this city. Leave a space for local talent to play.

Used to go here all the time. Such a shame to see it go. Keep the name alive at least.

London is losing all its culture to these boring hotels. save the theatre space before it hits the bin.
