Mental Health Matters
Due to a bad mental health, suicide accounts for over 800,000 deaths globally each year, with over 41,000 in the U.S alone. It is the second leading cause of death worldwide for 15-29 year old. In 2019, experts say that bullying and social media are the top reasons as to why teenagers are committing suicide. However, in many cases, people who die from suicide are caused by mental health issues. For example, Nigel, a 15-year-old, died last year after coming out as gay. His parents knew that he was thinking about suicide, but thought that he was doing better after seeing a therapist. Another example is Molly, Ian Russel’s daughter, who committed suicide after joining a club that normalizes self-harm due to self-worthlessness. These are only a few of many cases of suicide thoughts due to a bad mental health.
This petition is for schools to start a year-long mental health class where students can learn more about mental health issues, how to cope with a bad mental health, how to help those who they know are dealing with this issue, etc.
