We, the undersigned students, staff, faculty, and alumni of Manchester University, oppose HJR-6, a proposed amendment that would add the following language to the Indiana state constitution:

"Only a marriage between one (1) man andone (1) woman shall be valid or recognized as a marraige in Indiana. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized."

What happened to the Manchester College that was my home community? The place where we wore black arm bands and lived not just tolerance but compassion? What happened to the brave leadership of our beloved institute of peace? MU should lead us in the race for equality rather than be only bystanders.

I understand MU's desire to maintain an atmosphere of respect for various political stances, but I think that this situation calls for more than political consideration. It's a moral issue, and our university values and mission statments point us in the direction of opposing this proposed amendment.

Manchester's LGBT community was life-changing for me as a freshman, and I want Manchester to stay a place of enlightenment and civil rights. Neutrality is enabling systematic oppression.

As an MU alum and former faculty member--and a resident of North Manchester--I am proud of and grateful to the MU community of students, faculty, staff and alums who are speaking up and taking action on behalf of LGBTQ people.

This is a civil rights issue, period! The intimate relationship of marriage doesn't need a piece of paper to be real. However if marriage is a civil contract that is a social institution it needs to be equally available to all citizens, no matter what. It is not just a legal imperative it is a moral one.

I oppose HJR-6 personally and professionally. Personally, I, much like most community members and state citizens, would love to marry the love of my life one day. There is no reason that because of my sexual orientation, I do not deserve a wedding. The only thing that makes humans less than human is other humans.

Perhaps the MU of today is not the MC of yesterday that I remember so fondly. Disappointed they didn't stand strong on this one. Respect the faculty for speaking out on this.
