Petition for Marriage Equality in Indiana
Resolved, We, medical students, faculty, physicians, and community members of Indiana
(1) recognize as is definitively stated by the American Medical Association's June 2011 policy H-65.973 Health Care Disparities in Same-Sex Partner Households, that denying civil union or marriage based on sexual orientation is discriminatory and imposes harmful stigma on gay and lesbian individuals and couples and families;
(2) recognize that exclusion from civil union or marriage contributes to health care disparities affecting same-sex households;
(3) will work to reduce health care disparities among members of same-sex households, including minor children;
(4) will support measures providing same-sex households with the same rights and privileges to health care, health insurance, and survivor benefits, as afforded opposite-sex households; and
(5) will, therefore, in the interest of optimal public health outcomes, oppose legislation that writes discrimination into our state constitution.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many of you have joined this effort because I never imagined it would reach this many people. Thank you for putting this together. It feels like things are finally moving in the right direction.
Hard to believe we are still arguing about this in 2014. Equal rights for all families makes sense for everyone health-wise too.
THIS IS LONG OVERDUE. Discrimination is definitely a health issue and it affects so many people I know here in Indy. Glad to see some sanity.
Medical professional here. Agree 100 percent. The stress caused by these laws is real and it has actual impacts on patient health.
Finally some doctors speaking up about this. It is about time the medical community took a stand in Indiana. My friends deserve the same protections as everyone else.

Just learned about this petition. Wish I had known about it sooner. The documentation of all of the negative medical and psychological effects of banning same-sex unions/marriages is very compelling.
