Domestic violence counseling and support should be mandated for couples when a dispute occurs with police involvement, regardless if the child is in direct danger or not.

Currently, children are being removed from homes of domestic violence without proper interventions in place after the traumatic events. The policy at this time for children who witness domestic violence, is their removal from the home; not only does this further traumatize the child, but the parents involved lose their child, along with facing jail time.
There are many reasons this procedure is more harmful then good. First, the child is being punished for their parent's actions, and being put into the foster care system, which then in turn, may lead to the child feeling guilt and blame for something they have no control over.
Secondly, removing the child can further damage the couple's relationship and cause more violence in the home. By mandating couples to receive domestic violence counseling after the immediate dispute, the parents can work on their relationship and decide the correct actions that need to take place to keep their children, instead of trying to "win" them back from DCF.
This petition will help execute our goal of mandating families to receive proper interventions after a domestic violence dispute, without punishing the child by removing them from their homes. Ultimately, our goal is to help save families and work towards a world where domestic violence no longer happens.
