This petition is to introduce a bill into North Carolina legislature which would make Domestic Violence protection orders permanant. When a victim is granted a protection order the victim has to come back every other year to get the order renewed, which puts the victim in danger (especially if the victim has moved) because they are now back in the abusers teritory! It is also hard, in some towns to get them continued if it has not been violated, but, just because it hasn't yet doesn't mean that the order won't be violated! The abuser could be waiting for the violation to be dropped before they make their move.
We also need to get stiffer sentences for abusers. They are violent offenders and are more likely to committ a DV crime in the future than other violent offenders. Just like sexual preditors, abusers are never cured. Just because it is the first time they are brought to court doesn't mean that's the first time they have abused!
Every 15 seconds in this country a woman is abused by a partner or ex-partner. We need to get these abusers in prison and keep them there once we get them there. Domestic Violence is a cycle and a learned behavior....lets change the bahavior and stop the cycle!
I have been reading your stories of fear and resilience throughout the day. It is painful to see how many of you remain forced to walk back into a courtroom just to survive another year. I am currently coordinating with local advocates to push these legislative changes forward and I will provide updates as soon as I have a concrete path to the statehouse.

Seeing this grow makes me think of the many nights I spent paralyzed by the fear that my own protection order would expire. This momentum proves that we are finally ready to stop forcing survivors to walk back into the path of their abusers.

about time. why should a victim have to keep showing up in court to prove they are still scared? the abuser is the one who should be worried.

This is so necessary. Having to go back to court constantly is just letting the abuser keep tabs on where we are. It needs to stop.

Finally someone is speaking up about this. NC laws are way behind on protecting people. Keep them behind bars where they cant hurt anyone else.

My sister went through this and it was a nightmare. The system makes it way to easy for these guys to just wait it out until the order expires. Fix this now.

Its not right that victims have to keep reliving the trauma every 2 years just to feel safe in their own homes.
