This is a landmark site and must be saved for good reuse. Shame on Manchester for not fighting hard enough here ! It's peoples first impression once of the train from London...

I've been wondering about this beautiful building for the last month as I've started walking past it on my way to the station. The history is fascinating and it would be a tragedy if this building is lost. It needs to be accessible to the public - I would love to get inside!

Such a magnificent building should be protected, restored and put to good use, rather than being destroyed. Once it's gone, it's gone forever. And then, as usually is the case, people and politicians will regret the loss for decades to come. Preserving the building for future generations to enjoy, is at the same time a homage to all the craftsmen and artists who created this glorious building. Nowadays, it's impossible to recreate that kind of quality building. So I sincerely hope that it will be saved.

Preserve and rejuvinate Manchester's idle architecture. Every walk around Manchester displays beautiful buildings boarded up and decaying, the longer they're left to rot the more it'll cost to restore.

A beautiful building that needs tlc not grand designs something that doesn't say "it was sympathetic to the original architecture " it must be a use for the whole original building in mind.
Maybe The future venue for the National Steampunk Museum perhaps!

Mancunians don't want their iconic buildings torn down - we want them restored and celebrated in line with our sense of civic pride.

What is particularly sad about the failure to make good use of London Road Fire Station is it is one of the first buildings to greet first time visitors to Manchester.
It speaks of so many positive things, not least civic pride and service to community.
Whilst we should look to inward investment in new buildings like the Beetham and developments at New Islington, allowing free reign to architects and their clients to bring innovation in design to the city, it is the responsibility of the local authorities and other regional bodies to support and foster a sense of continuity; to safeguard the remaining iconic buildings of a the region - to promote the future identity of our cities through good use of their heritage.
And whilst I understand councils may not have the finances to develop buildings at risk, they do have the authority to put in place a long term commitment and administration team to handle a public/private partnership which could see buildings brought into use profitably through a consortium of investors.
This surely is the purpose of a single governing body which represents the community that elects it - to put in place long term strategies that are not about instant profit, but sustainable long term growth.
We only have to look at the cost effective but bland architecture currently rising in the city centre to know architecture of the quality of the London Road Fire Station is not likely ever to be built again.
