We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to: 'review the sentencing for causing death by dangerous driving where more than one life is lost in one incident' Two women both aged 48 lost there lifes on the 26th August 2009.They had been out for there annual meal with two other friends. They were pulling out of a junction when they were hit by a very very fast stolen car doing upto 80mph. The driver was 3 times over the drink drive limit and was trying to escape from a police officer. The driver before the crash had been driving extremly dangerous down a road with lots of bends and double white lines in the middle of the road. On the way down an off duty police officer was nearly wiped out by the driver. One of women the died at the scene and the other women died on arrival to hospital. The driver tried to escape from the scene but the quick thinking single handed police officer arrested him and the passanger. The driver pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving while under the influence of drink and aggrevated vechial taking. For this he received 12years for 2 innocent lifes that he took away. This law needs reviewing and sentencing in cases like these need to be given a sentence for each life not just one sentence for 2 or more lifes lost.

Updates

December 1, 2009

I have spent this week researching similar cases to better understand the systemic gaps in our current sentencing guidelines. The correspondence I receive from families who have endured similar tragedies reminds me why this review is necessary. I will continue to press the Prime Minister for an acknowledgement of this proposal.

December 1, 2009

The momentum behind this petition continues to grow as more people recognize the necessity of reforming these sentencing guidelines. It is clear that the public demands a more equitable approach to justice when multiple lives are taken in a single incident.

The law is a complete joke. Needs to be one sentence per victim and life means life in these cases. Something has to change.

Way to short. Should have got double that at the very least. Justice isnt served here.

12 years for two people is a joke. he gets to come out and have a life while their families are left with nothing. so unfair.

Heartbreaking. My thoughts go out to the familys. Its time the courts treated each life as individual value instead of a bulk deal.

Total madness that the sentence isnt cumulative. If you take multiple lives you should pay for every single one of them. Fix this now.

This makes me so angry. Driving that fast while drunk is straight up murder. The punishment is nowhere near enough.
