We, the undersigned, respectfully petition the Shelby County Board of Education to implement plans that include the presence of law enforcement professionals within each of the 39 instructional campuses wherein approximately 29,000 students expect to have a safe learning environment. With an approximate staff of 3,500 and an annual budget of $267 million, we feel adjustments can be made to fulfill this request.  Adding 40 officers at $60K/year (salary, benefits, equipment, et. al) would be $2.4 million or approximately 1% of the overall budget. The SRO (School Resource Officer) program currently in place at some Shelby County Schools could be an excellent educational tool for each campus and incorporated into the overall learning environment and objects. Moreover, we petition the Shelby County Commission to fund the request made by Sheriff Chris Curry related to placing Shelby County Sheriff Deputies within each of these campuses and to make arrangements, if possible, with the Shelby County Board of Education for a financial partnership or collaboration.  While the primary responsibility lies with the Shelby County Board of Education, each political subdivision must see the urgency and necessity to come to an agreement with utmost haste. In a post-Newtown world, taking no action is not an option.
