Every single day all over Montclair, people (especially parents walking with their small children) are almost hit by a car that is turning and whose driver is either not looking / doesn't care that there is someone in the crosswalk. In what is supposed to be a family-friendly town, drivers are making it dangerous simply to cross the street.
Help us appeal to our local officials to improve the conditions in the crosswalks, by increasing ticketing for drivers who carelessly speed around corners without stopping for pedestrians.

I spent this morning watching cars fly through the intersection near the elementary school and it is infuriating that we have to fight this hard just to walk our children to class. I am compiling a list of the most dangerous spots to present to the town council. Please keep posting your own experiences in the comments because proof of this recklessness is exactly what we need to get their attention.

Seeing this grow makes me feel like my neighbors finally see the same danger I live with while walking my own child to school. The momentum is building because so many of you know exactly how terrifying these intersections have become.

I watch driver after driver ignore the crosswalks on a daily basis in Montclair. I have nearly been hit multiple times myself by drivers racing to be first and making no effort to check for pedestrians as they cross sidewalks to enter & exit parking lots. I have even seen a driver nearly take out a crossing guard by flying around the stopped car in front of them without even slowing down. Finally, as a parent who knows multiple children who have been hit & injured by cars here in town, I truly fear for my children who are reaching the age where they will become more independent. We need active enforcement of traffic laws, so drivers do not feel they can endanger pedestrians with impunity.
My husband and I chose Montclair because it is so family friendly and walkable. However, I constantly worry about my husband's safety when he walks home from the train station when it's dark. And I am even more concerned each day as I walk my young children back and forth to school. Drivers often won't stop unless I step partially into the street and wave for them to stop. But that puts my kids and me at risk. We are renting now, but the lack of safety crossing the streets is one reason we may decide to buy somewhere else next year.
The intersection of Orange Road and Irving Streets is particularly dangerous as drivers speed, takes turns too quickly and do not stop fully at stop signs!
I was hit in a crosswalk taking my son to school 1 1/2 years ago and I'm still in pain - I would love to see drives held accountable. I'm tired of fearing crossing streets here in town, it's very out of control.
I and my family recently moved to greenwood avenue near Claremont. Coming from Brooklyn we like the walkability of our area but traffic on Claremont is a nightmare. Walking home from the train at night always feels dangerous when crossing Claremont. Even during the day people speed and don't pay attention-- I'm amazed at the speed people travel coming down the hill towards grove. It's clearly and area that should support foot traffic ( we're close to glenriidge Ave and walnut st area) and yet it's not pleasant to walk around with my kids. Claremont and greenwood ave in particular is dangerous and needs attention.
Drivers need to yield to pedestrians under all circumstances with policing to ensure compliance. The town needs to avail the resources to provide crosswalks with lights etc.
This is so desperately overdue. Our streets and highways have become like the "Wild West".

I am signing because drivers rarely stop at crosswalks. While some drivers have blatant disregard for the crosswalks, some do not see them until they are right upon them and cannot stop in time -- esp. at night. Please make our crosswalks safe for everyone.
