On the 26.11.13 my Brother John Averill was tragicaly killed on Blaydon Bank in Gateshead,Tyne & Wear(Ne21).We do not want another family to have to suffer the heartache and pain that we are feeling right now,and I strongly believe that something needs to be done to make Blaydon Bank a safer road.Residents have tried for years,to put forward their concerns regarding a particular stretch of the Road, which has amounted to nothing so far. Now,as a family member of someone who has lost their life on this dangerous Road,I aim to fight to have changes made,so that no one else has to go through what our family are going through. The road where John was killed is narrow, due to parked cars and vans to one side of the road as there are houses all the way down the bank, and parking in the area for residents is very limited,so alot park on the main road. The road is also a bus route, with the bus stops almost opposite each other, which again is a great concern safety wise. The particular stretch of the bank is called Zion terrace. The bottom end houses have large front gardens which have walls around 4 foot high which back onto the main road.Putting driveways into these gardens would be a big help, and would lessen the amount of park cars to the main road. The road would also benefit from double yellow lines, from the bus stops up over. There has been many accidents on this road over the years, something has got to be done.My brother may have still been here if changes were made to this road a long time ago.We can not bring John back, but we can fight to make changes so that no other family has to suffer.I have various pics of the road which shows how bad it can be,cars overtaking stationary vehicles meaning they have to travel down the middle of the busy road to get past, while the oncoming trafiic is also trying to get past. This road is a death trap. Please do something about it.Heartbroken little sis of John Averill 16.06.77-26.11.13

I never imagined this would reach one hundred people so quickly. It is truly humbling to see so many of you care about keeping our neighbors safe. This momentum belongs entirely to you.

This road has always been dangerous. Even back when I was a kid in the sixties, I remember seeing a couple of accidents while just passing. The traffic was no where like it is today. The traffic needs to slow down. On this road

as a resident on monarch terrace, blaydon bank speed bumps or a camera needs put in place. the rear streets such as mary street have traffic control measures yet we have our front door on a main road where people do excess speeds.

John was an old skool friend and a geniune person who was really easy to get on with. its such a tragic to loose a geniune guy to road accidents and to prevent this happening again we need attention towards this road.

I live around the corner from here, and agree changes should be made safety wise, especially arround the cross-road. Having 2 young children, i hate having to cross here. The cars fly up that hill and its only a matter of time before it happens again

I live opposite Zion Terrace and I have 3 children. My eldest daughter was involved in a hit and run two years ago just a little further down from where John was killed, they never caught who hit her. Something needs to be done.

I was the driver who knocked over the young lad nearby in October 2014. It was sheer luck that I managed to swerve to avoid a tragedy. I wasn't speeding. I live on Blaydon bank and have applied to have my long garden and my neighbours made into in shared driveway because I truly believe that taking the cars off the road and putting in speed deterring measures is the only way forward. The council are dragging their heels and the housing association are insisting on me funding it myself, even though I've lost my job through my own disability. If this were a more affluent area these ,easures would have been taken by now.

The vans coming up from Blaydon while I am driving down are a nightmare. They see I am travelling down after waiting for a break in the traffic and they make a beeline for me and refuse to move. Tonight I had someone behind me and therefore I couldn't move. I got out of my car because O thought I was having an attack. He could easily have waited for 10 seconds while I reached the bottom. He created road rage. And he didn't bat an eyelid.
