Dear President Machen: In January you took the unprecedented step of publicly endorsing Senator John McCain for the Republican presidential nomination. We now call on you, as an educator and president of one of the largest universities in the United States, to act upon this endorsement. We urge you to publicly condemn the vicious expressions of racism, intolerance, and xenophobia which have characterized crowd behavior at some recent rallies. We also call on you to issue a statement reassuring students at the University of Florida and other colleges and universities that the unacceptable behavior and language they have witnessed have no place on this or any other campus, or in America generally.
