PETITION: Conversion of Pedestrian-Controlled stop light to fully functional Traffic Signal

There is a Pedestrian-Controlled stop light on the intersection of 64 Ave and 180 St which is activated by pressing the button on either side of 64 Ave, as can be seen in the visual below i.e., the red circle shows the intersection while the yellow arrow shows the pedestrian crossing in the picture on the left.

As many of you are aware, the Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School (or, “LTSS”) is just south of this picture on 180 St. There was an advisory published on the LTSS ‘Panther app’ on May 04, 2023, highlighting a potential hazard and becoming the reasoning for this petition:

"Attention student drivers and passengers.... please remember to always exercise caution when driving and be aware of your surroundings. Passengers should avoid exiting vehicles"

We want to keep everyone in our school and local community as safe as possible.

We are certain everyone is aware how busy 64 Ave., is and trying to take a turn onto it or crossing it while traveling on 180 St., after dropping or picking up children from LTSS, is very time consuming especially during peak rush hours.

This is why many instances have been reported where passengers (often students), or even drivers stopped at the intersection, exit their vehicles and cross 180 St., to press the pedestrian crossing button to stop the traffic on 64 Ave. This practice not only endangers the people exiting their vehicles, but it also causes a dangerous situation for traffic behind the stopped vehicle as well as vehicles traveling south on 180 St in the opposite direction!

This petition is being spearheaded by the LTSS Parent Advisory Council (or, “PAC”) and its purpose is to collect as many signatures as possible to submit it to the City of Surrey for action. We believe that the above-mentioned practice is causing a very risky and hazardous driving situation and that there is sufficient traffic flow at this intersection, to justify converting the current Pedestrian-Controlled stop light into a fully functional Traffic Signal enabling smooth and safe flow of traffic from all directions at this intersection.

YOU TOO CAN HELP!

If you or anyone you know is being affected by the above or even if you feel this petition to be a good idea, we would greatly appreciate your support in this endeavor. You can help in the following manner:

1. Sign the petition below to show your support.

2. Spread the word to family, friends, neighbors, and other members of the community and ask them to sign the petition as well.

Please feel free to reach out in case you have any queries in relation to the above and hopefully we can count on your support to bring about this change!

im still hearing from parents about how scary that intersection is during school drop off times and it keeps reminding me why we need to get this changed before something bad actually happens. just sent a follow up email to the city council to make sure they know we arent going anywhere until they pay attention to the traffic flow.

wow i honestly didnt expect this to get so much traction so fast. reading through all your comments about how dangerous that intersection actually is really shows we are on the right track.

This is needed 100%. My street (181A) is an absolute hellish street to exit left onto 64th Ave, especially during school & traffic hours . There's never breaks in traffic. People end up sitting in the painted median when there is a gap in the eastbound traffic.

Very backed up, very dangerous for learners my drivers to try to be aggressive in traffic on a hill where you cannot see cars coming.

We have been in need of this for far too long. With all the events on the fairgrounds and a choking point at both ends from two lanes to one it’s know wonder why more kids haven’t been struck by vehicles

I live on 180th and have seen many accidents with vehicles and pedestrians. Horrible intersection that needs a proper light!

This is a high traffic crossing and a pedestrian controlled light is no longer sufficient. Should be consistent wi the traffic light at 180 and 60 - the south side of the school.

I've waited there times of 10 to 20mins unless someone or I have to exit my car to press the pedestrian button to activate the lights

This is a much needed light, for the kids safety going to and from school and for cars trying to turn onto 64th.
