There have been at least 2 deaths nearby related to wandering in the past year. Neighboring counties have implemented this amazing program which saves lives and saves time/money on searches. I'd like to invite everyone to sign this petition to let Lorain County Sheriff know how many people are concerned and support implementing this program. I have spoken with Erie County and their sheriff is more than willing to meet with ours to assist in any way they can. The following is a description from the Erie County Sherriff's website:

"When children or adults afflicted with autism spectrum disorders, Down’s syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or other memory-related illnesses wander from the safety of their caregivers, your Sheriff’s Office is called to action. A search that previously may have taken days can now be successfully concluded quickly—potentially saving lives and thousands of taxpayer dollars.

Project Lifesaver clients will receive a plastic bracelet containing a water-resistant radio transmitter. Each participant’s transmitter is assigned a radio frequency that is unique both to them and their geographical area. The bracelets may be worn on the client’s wrist or ankle.

When a Project Lifesaver client is discovered to be missing, the caregiver reports the situation to the Sheriff’s Office or other local law enforcement agency via the 911 system. Trained deputy sheriffs or local law enforcement officers will respond to search for the missing Project Lifesaver client using the program’s radio frequency tracking receivers."

Please sign and let our Sheriff know that keeping our community safe is important to you. Thanks!

I have dealt with children with autism. Neighbors parents with dementia wandering off . I think this is a great idea. We are all our brothers keeper, but sometimes we need extra help. I think the bracelets are an excellent idea. Nursing homes have bracelets. Some people have to take care of family at home. What a blessing it would be to have this resource.

We have recently moved to Sheffield Lake from North Dakota where these bracelets have saved lives. Please, this does save lives.

I know the feeling of this happening. Or at least the after effects. Our 13 year old Autistic boy ran away during the night 3.6 miles to our old home. And I still can't believe that no one saw him or stopped to ask him why he was out. BTW, he came back home the same 3.6 miles. He left a clothes and shoe trail.

We so desperately need this in Lorain county!! I have a son with asd and he is also a bolter. He loves water and this recent tragedy could have very well been any one of us living with autism or not.

I support this fully! Please pass this. I had a sister with Huntingtons Disease and she would roam the street. And so helpful to children, especially with the recent passing of Sidney from Sheffield.
