I support the young worker movement and the creation of an OPEIU Local 2 Young Worker Committee. The first and primary goal of the committee will be to get young members involved in the union and the labor movement. Today’s young workers are the tomorrow’s leaders. We need to create an active and engaged membership across all shops, ages, genders, and races. It is important to get our newer and younger members into the conversation and into the movement right away. Young people are leading the Occupy Wall Street fight just like they did in Wisconsin, Egypt, and everywhere else there is a real movement for change. We need to harness the talent and enthusiasm we know our young members possess. Over the past year, OPEIU has developed a nation-wide Rising Stars program. This committee is an effort to support that program at a local level, contribute to something larger, and show that Local 2 is progressive, proactive, and preparing for our future. We ask that you form this important committee so that we can inspire and mobilize our younger members.
