The district finally backed down and chose to uphold the original integrity of our academic rankings. It is shameful that we had to drag the administration toward common sense but we secured the correct outcome for our students. Stay alert because we will keep watching to make sure they do …

Petition to uphold the intent of the LISD Valedictorian and Salutatorian Honors for the graduating class of 2022 (and future classes). As the policy is written today it is clear the INTENT of the six semester policy rule is to exclude late coming transfers NOT to make an exception for Juniors to be included in the Valedictorian and Salutatorian Honors. This petition requests that the LISD Administration and Board uphold the original intent of the policy not their error/oversight.

What is happening: A junior requested and was approved for early graduation. They were added to the Graduating Class of 2022 mid-year (according to early graduation policy). This is only 9 weeks before grades are finalized for the Valedictorian and Salutatorian Honors. Due to an error/oversight in LISD policy one of the early graduating Juniors is taking the Valedictorian spot for the 2022 graduation. This is bumping the current Valedictorian down to Salutatorian and the Salutatorian down to 3. Everyone in the administration admits this is not the intent of the policy, but so far are not agreeing to uphold the intent of the policy vs. the letter. Both the superintendent and LISD Board have the authority to uphold the intent of the policy. This petition is to encourage them to do so.

In the comment section please indicate whether you are a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior at LISD. We also invite parents and community members to sign the petition, but want to separate students from parents and community members.

The administration is finally feeling the heat because this momentum proves they cannot hide behind bureaucratic loopholes anymore. They refuse to acknowledge the intent of their own rules but they cannot ignore the flood of people demanding justice for these students.

Add a spot in the top 10% for the Junior, but they shouldn’t move the top two students down, nor bump the last person off the 10% list.

The policy should be upheld especially in the middle of the school year, that’s not fair to the seniors that have worked hard for the Val/Sal places in their graduating class

The integrity and intent should be upheld. A student who is graduating early and not with their respective class should be honored but not as a title holder for the top 2 graduates

As a 8th grader, this could technically affect us too. Someone could do the same thing to our class one day and I don’t want the standing policy to affect us too.

Surly the LISD officials will take a look at surrounding schools policies and consider the intent of the current policy. Fix it now and have the fortitude to stand up for what is right.

I am a junior. These kids have worked too hard for too long for someone to randomly sweep in and bump them out of their spot. Abby and Mike have been Valedictorian and Salutatorian for four years until now.
