Officer Brian Decker of the Virginia Beach Police Department, Marine Patrol, is vocally prejudiced against surfing. A direct quote from him on 7/1/15: "Ive been in this battle for 11 years with you surfers. If you've known one, you've known them all. They're all deadbeats."
Virginia Beach is a surfing-centric town. Our mayor is a surfer. We house the oldest surfing contest in the US. It is a significant revenue source for the city of Virginia Beach. Our hope is that he will learn to surf with us and perhaps see surfing in a different light, which would ultimately lead to more objective and non-prejudiced law enforcement.
Officer Brian Decker, must choose one of the following to help him mitigate his misinformed prejudice against surfers and surfing at large.
1. Anger management course/Anti-discrimination course
2. Free surf lessons for a week

I have been hearing stories from so many of you who have felt the sting of this bias firsthand while trying to enjoy our local waters. It is exhausting to face that kind of hostility in a place that has always been like a second home to me. I am currently working on getting this directly in front of the department heads to show them how much this matters to all of us.

im sure all the Wounded Warriors that take part in the surf camp every year arent considered degenerates. Those guys did so much for all of us. Gave up limbs. And seems to me by the looks on their faces that they love surfing. Get a grip and look at the big picture. Is this really the best way for you to represent the VBPD?
I'm sure all the deadbeat nurses, Engineers, mechanics, teachers, IT folk, stay At home moms. Students, doctors, lawyers, firefighters, police And rescue personnel appreciate being summed up as deadbeats.
I think he should surf for a month, not a week. Teach him the science behind it, so he knows that there isn't simply good days to surf. Also, Introduce him to many successful individuals who surf. I personally know a successful realtor, contractor, orthodontist, restaurant owner, and physical therapist who surf.
I have been verbally disrespected by Decker in receiving a ticket from him. It's crazy to me that someone I have never met somehow knows that I am a second-class citizen because of my surfing lifestyle. Let's hope this sends a clear message!
I am not a surfer, but I certainly would not consider all surfers to be "deadbeats". It seems to me like a no-brainer that the police would have someone working the beaches that isn't anti-surfing.

Virginia Beach's economic growth and stability relies on events like ECSC. As a city employee, officer Decker should be celebrating a positive pass time like surfing and understand that we are tax payers and provide this city with its wealth, including his salary.
