Currently, New Gloucester Fire Rescue members receive only a small stipend, $15.00 per call as well as $15.00 per training, whether the call or training lasts 10 minutes or all day.

Across Maine, a dramatic decline in the number of volunteer firefighters, particularly young ones, threatens the ability of small departments to provide essential public service.

And while the number of on-call firefighters is decreasing, the demand for fire and rescue services is increasing.

New Gloucester's firefighters are finding it increasingly difficult to rise to the call. We have an aging volunteer force and an increase in area population, with many residents elderly and in need of emergency services. Increased population also means a rise in motor vehicle accidents, and our fire department members are first responders.

The New Gloucester selectmen are slated to review compensation for our fire department. Please sign the petition to let them know that you are in favor of paying our volunteers!

Our fire and rescue department does an amazing and job. I am thankful for their dedication. I fully support appropriate compensation.

Can't believe that we only pay $15 for a fire call where firefighters put their lives on the line for others.

$15 a fire is crazy considering the risks.
