This is American History - stop destroying it! Preserve our heritage and see this honorific memorial as what it is - to the veterans dead heroes of the Confederate States of America. It's ALL our history!

The majority vote of the panel created by the City Commission to make a recommendation was by its stated morion was to retain the US Veteran memorial monument in Hanover Square based on Federal, State & local legislation. The motion also recommended inclusion of a plaque with additional contextual history to include the service and stationing in the area of free African American soldiers of the US Army at that time.
The soldier atop the monument is NOT one of a slave holding officer, a man of means. . Rather he represents the heroism of the common man of the South - farmer, merchant, lumberman, carpenter, brick layer - Confederate soldiers all fighting to save their family, their land and livelihoods.
We are NOT California. We do not RULE by Referendum as all City Commissioners know. They were ELECTED to make decisions on our behalf, not pass the buck, to Voters at some later date. Follow the law. Honor history.

We are not Hitler. Do not destroy history, books, and let's honor everyone who fights to preserve their home that both black and white fought for. That's right, black slaves fought on the side of the South. They considered many Yankees (released from prison to fight) rapist, thiefs, and invaders who took from everyone.

I wouldn't think of destroying Martin Luther King's monument. It is a part of history just as the Confederate monument. Please honor all monuments that remind us of our history.
