Brenda is a native counselor at Port Angeles High School in Port Angeles, Washington. The students at the High School LOVE Brenda, and we were shocked to hear that her employer, Lower Elwha Education Department, is moving her to Port Angeles's middle school, Steven's Middle School. We NEED Brenda at the High School. So please read this on why you should sign this petition and keep Brenda at the High School!
Brenda helps students with school work, keeping grades up, and encouraging them to do their best. There is lots of people at the school that help with these things too, but Brenda has something special to her that helps the kids do better. Maybe it's her kindness, maybe it's her patience, maybe it's her funny personality, or maybe it's the comfortable environment she surrounds the students with.
Brenda welcomes EVERYONE into her classroom, and makes sure they are safe and comfortable. Not only does she make them feel safe and comfortable, but wanted and important.
Not only does Brenda's welcoming environment help students, but the encouragement she gives the students. Brenda makes sure to let the students know she BELIEVES in them, and will do ANYTHING to make sure they succeed. Her encouragement is the main reason I go to school. She makes me feel like I can do this, I can get through school, I can graduate, and I can go to college.
So if someone is doing all these amazing things, why make them switch schools? Brenda's help with schoolwork, welcoming personality, and encouragement is the one of few reasons why I (and many others) haven't gave up on school.
So please, we don't want Brenda to leave, and we know she doesn't want to leave either, and sign this petition so Brenda can stay at the High School and help her students!

Brenda was the reason I graduated on time. She was my shoulder to lean on, the mother I needed in school to get me through. She cared about every child that walked through her doors.
It is imperative to continue to have success coaches like Brenda at schools like PAHS. Think about how many tribal students need the support and guidance a mentor like Brenda can support. Not just Elwha students but lots of tribal students attend PAHS. And with drop out rates so high, our youth need to know they have a stable support system. Brenda is just that, and she has been for many years now. Going to college after highschool can be a daunting experience and if you have some one dedicated to be a link to a better future why break the chain? Department administrators can forget how much a mentor can impact a young persons life so please reassess who would benefit more from Brenda's presence. PAHS cannot give our Native students the individual attention, a good portion of them need.
As one of Brenda's first round of students, she helped me tremendously. She pushed me to not give up and helped me until the day of graduation. If it wasn't for her mother-like caring attitude I probably would of the threw the town in when I found out I was a little too far behind. She's a great support net for the kids up there. She doesn't only support them academically but she cares about their home care as well, she also provides snacks on her own dime. To this day I still hold a great relationship with her and she will always hold a special piece of my heart for helping me complete one of my very first huge mile stones in life. I would be so sad for our students to lose such a great supporter.
As we all know walking the halls of PAHS as a Native American is no easy passage. The students need all the support and help they can get to keep walking those halls with their heads held high. It's obvious that Brenda provides those students with that sort of comfort and motivation. Why take that away from them? It is about the kids isn't it? Then why not listen to what they want? As a former student, I could tell you Brenda provided me with that same comfort and motivation I needed to make my days at PAHS enjoyable as she continues to do today. Even if she is Makah lol (winky face emoji)
Not only is she very supportive to each and every kid she is very informative on different scholarship the students can apply for and even sends you information on those scholarship she is a great person! Although my boys are no longer in school both having graduated she was a great influential person for them.

I do not personally go to Port Angeles, but I am close friends with a student there. I couldn't tell you about any of this student's teachers, but I hear about Brenda constantly. Brenda has made such an impact on this student's life, as I am sure she has on many other students at PA. Brenda has been there for my friend in some of their hardest times and has been there when they just need a hug or a friend to laugh around with. Brenda's position at the high school is essential to all of those she has come in contact with. Even if she has just touched the life of this one student, isn't that enough to say that she is valued and important?
