Honorable Judge Crane, We, the undersigned, are a group of friends and supporters of Susan Lefevre, also known as Marie Walsh. We are asking for you to consider her case carefully and allow her forgiveness. Today, Susan Lefevre exists in a prison cell, for a mistake she made at 19 years of age. She has already paid for this mistake with nearly twenty months of incarceration. Susan Lefevre could potentially be incarcerated another five years, or longer. Others who have committed similar offenses have come and gone or been given probation, but Susan Lefevre remains behind bars, a victim of a failed and discarded drug policy long ago. We believe that Susan Lefevre deserves to have her original sentence vacated and be resentenced under current terms and guidelines. In 1975, Judge Joseph MacDonald did not take into account Lefevre’s limited involvement, her lack of prior crimes, her youth, her willingness to accept responsibility. A grave injustice was done to Susan Lefevre by the State of Michigan. She has been punished enough for the mistakes she made as a teenager. We are aware that she was granted probation on an escape charge, and that the original sentence of 10-20 years still remains enforced. Lefevre has clearly demonstrated over the last thirty years that she poses no threat of repeated criminal activity. She has raised a good family alongside her husband, leads a productive life and is an asset to her community. Judge Crane, you are a good and honorable man. You have the reputation for fairness, and we highly respect the office you hold. We ask that you find forgiveness for a woman who has worked so hard to lead a respectable life.
