The school is named after the man that the county was named after. It has been that way for a long time. I do not believe (nor like the idea) of changing my high schools name leaving the Walker off. It was Ok to remove the County off of it, but the name WALKER should be left alone. thanks Rick Conn Class of '63

We have to keep Walker High School as it is, we need to boycott the jasper shopping and refuse to vote for anyone who has any job with the city now ie Sonny Posey. Ann Jackson is a spineless jerk who refuses to discuss the matter she should be kicked out of the city before she decides to change the name of Jasper to Jackson to coincide with her ego trip.

As a member of the last class to have attended school in the "Old Building", I do NOT agree with changing Walker High Schools name! Leave it AS IS so when we talk about our high school, our kids will STILL know it as good ole "Walker High"!

Allow a vote before the name change and see if that is what the majority of the people want, Is Jasper a Democracy or a Dictatorship?

As a WHS 1991 graduate, I am saddened to hear this news. Changing to Jasper from Walker is exclusionary from all other parts of the county. Is that really the message the Board wants to send to the full populace of Walker County? In addition, it quashes the continuing legacy of decades of Walker High School graduates and part of the future camaraderie with that cohort that would otherwise be enjoyed by future graduates of WHS. I fear this decision may have been made in haste or at least not under the transparency of public awareness with a sufficient public lead, disclosure, and comment time, based on the volume of objections seen here. Just because the vote may have happened at a public meeting is not a guarantee that sufficient effort was made to guage and garner public opinion. I hope that a Board member or other authority in local government will start the process or make a motion to reconsider this name change, with ample public comment period. If the name change stands thereafter, so be it, but the reactions to this are certainly noteworthy.

One hundred years of history should not be disregarded because one study suggests a name valued and honored by a significant majority has negative connotations.

As a descendant of the Grace family who came to Walker County in the 1850’s and who are listed in the History of Walker County book among the early settlers of the area who built the community (at a time, may I point out, when “JASPER” did not exist), I feel there is history and heritage that is of value, history that should be retained, and history that *should* be of importance to the community. Walker High School as well as the School System’s Facebook pages state as their motto or slogan "Future Focused - Tradition Rich". It is in keeping with tradition and retaining history that “Walker” should stay in the name. With 100 years of rich history whose alumni includes such noteworthy people as George Lindsey, former Miss Alabama Leigh Sherer, numerous professional football players, and 1931 graduate, AJ McDanal (and my former 6th Grade teacher “Mr. Mac”) who played football at Walker and was a member of the state championship team that won 11 games and went on to receive a scholarship to the University of Alabama, where he was a roommate of Paul W. "Bear" Bryant for two years and was a member of the 1934 national championship team – all of these folks who went to a school named “WALKER”. Why would the community not want to retain that legacy?
