We love our pets, so we micro-chip them in the hope that if they are lost we can be reunited with them, or if the worst happens we will be informed. A scanner costs around £50, and if an animal is micro-chipped it takes a quick call to the micro-chip company to give them the chip number and they do the rest. You may think that Leeds City Council's cleansing department (like some others in Yorkshire) scan any dead pets that are found on the roads, but they do not, despite often telling the public that they do. In fact, even if a dead cat or dog has a collar with owner details they do not call. I am sure you will agree that this is outrageous and unacceptable. Let's let Leeds City Council know how we feel! We expect them to respect pet owners by scanning dead pets found. If Sheffield Council can do it why can't they? You can help by signing this petition, and forwarding the link to everyone you know. You can also help by phoning or emailing Leeds City Council to make a complaint about it. I have done this already but the more complaints the better. 0113 222 4405. Thank you so much.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many people care about this issue. This momentum belongs entirely to you and your willingness to point out that our pets deserve better.

My next door neighbours cat was taken from right outside their house. No one even attempted to knock on the door to ask if the cat was known! Appalling disregard for someone’s pet!

our cat picked up by council last week.trying all ways to get him back.we rang council helpline, the lady knew less than we did and could not help in any way.why cant you just ring the cleansing department and get a reply.leeds city council treating us like trash.i will not let this matter go.if something is wrong it is wrong and something should be done.we live in a world where no one can ask a question about anything.leeds city council is like a secret society.well i will not go away

My cat was moved by the council I believe after it was run over ,no one has contacted me or updated the system. He was reported on the lost pet site on Facebook as seen deceased but no one could find him.

It is disgusting. The only ones on the website are those that are reported by the public. What is the point of micro-chipping your animals if they can't be arsed to check

It is heartbreaking if the whereabouts of a lost pet go unknown just because Leeds City Council doesn't care and thinks that binning a dead animal is appropriate.
