We, the undersigned members of the James E. Rogers College of Law Class of 2010, respectfully request that you decline the previously-issued invitation to speak at our graduation ceremony. We are deeply concerned about several bills that have recently come before the Arizona House of Representatives, specifically SB 1070 and SB 1024, one of which has now passed into law. We believe that these bills are motivated by racism, fear, and xenophobia and feel strongly that their enactment into law will create an intolerable atmosphere of disrespect and intimidation for people of diverse backgrounds in Arizona. While we respect your freedom as a newly-appointed representative to vote on each bill in accordance with your conscience, our consciences do not permit us to stand by without comment while you, our class representative, support the passage of bills which are so antithetical to the essential concepts of respect, inclusion, due process and civil rights that have grounded our legal education. We therefore regret to inform you that we, as members of the Class of 2010, can no longer ask you to represent us at our graduation ceremonies.
