We, the undersigned graduating students of Arizona College of Nursing, respectfully request that the administration reconsider the selection of Representative Julie Willoughby as the keynote speaker for our graduation ceremony.

Our concern is not based on political party affiliation, but rather on ensuring that graduation remains an inclusive celebration for all students and their families. Many students feel that Representative Willoughby's public statements and legislative actions related to immigration and healthcare do not reflect the values of compassion, dignity, and equitable care that have been emphasized throughout our nursing education.

As future nurses, we believe commencement should unite and inspire the graduating class. We respectfully ask the administration to consider a speaker whose message can be embraced by the broadest possible group of graduates and guests.

By signing this petition, students are expressing support for reconsidering the current graduation speaker selection.

Background Information

Students interested in learning more about the concerns that prompted this petition are encouraged to review Representative Julie Willoughby's public statements and legislative actions related to immigration and healthcare.

One example is her appearance in the 2024 political advertisement "Damage," in which she discussed the impact of immigration on Arizona hospitals and healthcare resources. Some students believe these statements, as well as subsequent legislation she has supported regarding immigrant patients and healthcare access, are inconsistent with the nursing values of compassion, dignity, and equitable care for all individuals.

PLEASE CHANGE THIS. We worked way too hard to have our graduation overshadowed by someone who makes so many of us feel unwelcome.

Everyone deserves to be represented, valued, and to feel welcome into the profession, as they’ve worked so hard to get here!
