Bipolar II disorder is a chronic and persisting mood disorder characterized by episodes of depression and hypomania that, untreated, can have very serious consequences for the individual, and those around them. Many individuals living with the condition will need to undergo lifelong medical treatment. This often puts them under significant financial strain.
Lamotrigine (or Lamictal) has come to be known as a mainstay of treatment for Bipolar II disorder. It has both mood stabilising and anti-depressive qualities. It is recognized by many clinicians and professional bodies and has been approved for use in Bipolar Disorder in the United States since 2003. However in Australia, it remains off the PBS, putting this potentially life saving medication out of the financial reach of many Australians. Considering the best available evidence from scientific research, we urge the Commonwealth Goverment to reconsider its current position to make this medication available to all Australians who need it to lead a healthy, successful, life.
