History: The City of Wichita Public Skatepark was developed and designed for the skateboard community in and around Wichita, KS. Thanks to local skaters and community leaders, after months of planning, designing and work, Wichita now has a much-anticipated public skate park. A nationally renowned skate park contractor, Wally Halladay, was hired to design and build the three skateboard bowls. During these months of planning and designing it has always been, first and foremost, a skateboard park however; our public skate park is being overwhelmed with bicycles, scooters, unicycles and rollerbladers. After less than a month of public use, the park is already suffered damage from the heavier bicycles that are being ridden in the bowls that were designed for skateboards. The heavy bicycles pegs are gouging the concrete and metal coping on the edge of the bowls. If something is not done to prevent the bicycles, scooters and other \"wheeled recreational\" vehicles to use the park, the damage will continue. The park was not designed for the space that all the bicycles take up just waiting around the bowls. They impede the foot traffic around the narrow paths at the edges of the bowls. There is also major concern with injuries that could occur if skateboarders and bicyclers collide. Petition: We the undersigned do hereby petition the City of Wichita to put into effect a city ordinance that prohibits bicycles, scooteres, unicycles and any motorized vehicle from utilizing the City of Wichitas Skatepark street course and bowls. We are signing this petition in good faith that our City Council member\'s will help maintain the City of Wichita Skatepark for it\'s intended use. If we continue to allow all manner of \"wheeled\" sport equipment into the park we undermine the intent of the park. all planning designing and work that went into the park was with the intent of use by skateboarders. The designing and planning was not for bicycles, scooters, unicycles and motorized vehicles. We respectfull request this petition to give the Wichita police the authority to have any violators to be removed from the park if such ordinance is violated.
