Our province has only one vascular surgeon (Dr. Peter Midgley) to serve our entire population. This means that Dr. Midgley is on call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year, because he has no one to back him up. This is the main reason that he has decided to resign his position and move to Halifax where he can work with a team who can cover for each other on their time off. I have personally spoken to Dr. Midgley and he has stated to me and also to the media and government officials that he would love to stay on P.E.I. and he would do so if the health care system would provide some help for him. That's all he is asking for! Dr. Midgley is a top professional in his field and the people of P.E.I. are entitled to have a vascular surgeon available when needed. Without one, a patient would need to be transported to Halifax, which in many cases would not be quick enough or the patient may not be strong enough as was the case with our daughter Rachelle.
