Since the teachers at the School for Advanced Studies have no reason to put our property in jeopardy, We, the students, call for a rescinding of the phone collection rule, and shall refuse to acknowledge it if it comes into effect.

Updates

October 24, 2018

Seeing all these names show up under the petition is honestly surreal and I keep refreshing the page just to make sure I am not dreaming this up because it feels like everyone finally agrees that our property should stay with us. It turns out I am definitely not the only one stressed about this rule being forced on us and seeing this kind of energy makes me feel like we might actually get somewhere if we just keep pushing back.

I am 18 years old. I can choose to drop out of school but I can’t keep my phone on my person.

If the point of all this was to focus students in class more than their phones, I think a good talk would have done a better longer lasting impact without retaliation. The students here in SAS are able to understand (I hope) and show more respect towards our peers. I feel as if we need a Henrey Clay with us right now to set some good compromises.

We have so much freedom being an SAS student yet you concern yourselves with taking away our phones? We should be trusted to keep them away if we are allowed no uniforms, attend a college campus with college classes, and have other adult responsibilities. This just seems childish.

I just don't see how taking our property is going to make us pay more or less attention in class. A smart phone can be a useful tool in the classroom and if someone wants to distract themselves they can easily accomplish that in many other ways than their phone. It's out property that we need for emergencies and I will not put the safety of my property into the hands of another who I have not agreed to hand my property to

The Phone Act of 2018. And just like the Stamp Act of 1765, it shall be repealed.

I need my phone to live. It gives me energy shocks through the cracked screen and keeps me awake in class.
