The city finally reversed course and committed to keeping youth tackle football under the Parks and Recreation department. I am relieved that our kids have their program back but we will remain alert to ensure they keep this promise. Thank you for staying in this fight with me.

We, the citizens of the City of Virginia Beach, petition the Virginia Beach City Council to mandate that the City Parks and Recreation Department to continue to run and manage city wide youth tackle football.
The Virginia Beach City Parks and Rec wants to abandon youth tackle football. Therefore, not providing the opportunity for our sons and daughters to participate in an organized tackle football. Our youth age boys and girls (age 10-14) are in the most influential years of their development. The City Parks and Recreation Department stated mission statement is to 1) Deliver programs that reflect priorities in our community and 2) support tiered levels of service that recognize the diverse needs of our community.
I demand that the Virginia Beach City Parks and Recreation Department fully fund youth tackle football.

Reaching one thousand signatures has been a long and draining grind but the fact remains that our kids deserve better than what the city is offering. I am exhausted by the silence from the council office yet seeing this many people insist on keeping the program alive gives me the strength to push forward.

The silence from the department remains deafening but I am still sending emails daily to make sure they know we are not going anywhere. My inbox is full of messages from parents worried about where their kids will go next season and that weight is fueling me to keep pushing forward.

My son loves playing for the city leagues. Don't take this away from the kids who have nowhere else to go to play.
Football kept me out of trouble when I was a kid. These coaches are mentors and you guys are just gonna throw that all away? Stop it.
KEEP THE PROGRAM. It is the only affordable option for a lot of families in VB. Shame on the city for even thinking about cutting this.
• Youth Football stresses the fundamentals of teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship and the value of a good education. It recognizes the student athletes for their commitment on and off the field and in the classroom. Youth football instills and builds character and academics through the athletic programs. This has a predominate effect on all the students, which has provided a continuum of opportunities in the past, present and the future. “There is no better place to see happiness than reflected in the eyes of a child; there is no greater return on investment than seeing a child excel; and because a happy child makes a happy student and encourages them to dream and achieve”. This belief helps the kids to build confidence, assurance, and certainty in them. Keep Youth football!!!!
Ridiculous idea. We pay taxes for these programs and the city needs to do its job and keep tackle football running.
Dear Ma'am or Sir; I coach here in Va Beach for Point o View. I started coaching in 2007! 125 lbs my self ,Scott,Pat. We went in 2008 from worst to first. That means nothing,the first thing is to help mold there minds ,Hearts. I agree about Concussion and that we as coaches and parents, should know what to look for! It's treatable. Look not to be mean, a child can be hit in the head in a pool, by a baseball just standing there not see it coming.Hit by a car failing to stop when the bus has the stop sign out. I'm sure you get my point. FOOTBALL teaches Fundimentals ,team play, helping each other to accomplish one goal work toward that goal. It teaches them dependable,reliability,self respect. When I coached Everyone got a chance to do whatever he position you wanted to play ! We went from worst to first not just ,just because the coaches did this or that. We came in first because those kids worked for it ,each and everyone played a part. We did not have to first. We were all family first, and brothers on that field first. I have watched most of the kids I've coached, graduate and become a part of Society. These young men for the Most part Learned that self discipline on the football field and the use later in life. Sorry to Babble on. It really hurts as a coach and as a man see football taking away from the kids. Each young person should get a chance to have that experience . learn from it and to feel that rush you Get when you walk out your door on September 1 and you can feel "football" in the air I don't care who you are where you played but you know what I'm talking about. When you take it Away ,you lose So much. I am 50 years old and I can still since football season when that time of year comes around. It's in your senses and your blood the way the sky looks and the ground feels you FEEL IT!!!! If you have never played. Youth football develops character traits in young men that carry on for a lifetime. Hard work, discipline, selflessness embody a true essence of what it means to be a team player. The years of 10-14 are the most influential in a young persons life and it is extremely important that the City of Virginia Beach Parks and Rec not abandon these kids. The city parks and rec department provides a great service to these kids and their families and allows an affordable way to participate in youth athletics. It would be a true injustice to not have the city support youth tackle football.
