Our school had nothing to do with the civil war. I don't think any of us thought about it like that. I remember coming home from playing football games singing the Alma mater coming across the Elk river. West is the Best Side!

We are sensitive to the need to lay to rest the tragic circumstances that led to the horrible American civil war. But we who graduated from Stonewall have an obvious attachment to our alma mater's name. In my 3 years at Stonewall, I never heard anyone associate the name of the school with any divisive view of our society.

Some folk should know that in 1964/65 the trophy case was smashed and the confederate flag taken out. There was no back lash and no complaints and the flag was forever removed. Those responsible for the flags removal was ahead of the curve, way ahead. I played for the General's and yes a student dressed like the confederate general paraded around. He was none athletic and a none issue. I could even be labeled a racist by some accounts, but I am a General for life.

This is getting ridiculous and has to stop!!! We all could be touchy and offended by something. I am offended they want to change it so I should have as much right to keep it as they have to change it.

The petition to change the name of SJMS is an over reaction to the SC flag situation. Please don't change the name.

My late Mother was a graduate of SJHS. Very proud of her years there. The pride that was displayed was unequal to anything. Leave the name alone and allow the former students remain proud of their High School.

Please do not change the name of SJMS. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson is a West Virginia, born in Clarksburg. If the school's name is changed then Sissonville will have to change their mascot to "Native Americans" instead of Indians. Plus Robert C Byrd's name will have to come off of every public building because he was once a member of the KKK. Please keep the name of Stonewall Jackson Middle School!
